Continuing our Great Northwestern Adventure took us to our initial intended location of Glacier National Park. We headed out at about 9 am hoping to have a nice day in the mountains. We knew it had snowed up on Logan Pass the day before, but hoped it would be better. No such luck.
Glad we had road signs.
This piece of road on the way to the park was not pleasant in the rain and fog.

We made it to Wyoming! Bucket check list marked.
Conveniently, There is an entrance to Yellowstone right on the border and Mammoth Hot Springs is just 5 miles down the road.
The Hot Springs have been growing for thousands of years. The hot water from the spring cools and leaves behind calcium carbonate. Those deposits build up over time (a lot of time) and created the mounds and The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-9629458707500382172018-07-29T14:34:00.000-04:002018-07-29T14:35:04.089-04:00Drive to Wyoming from Glacier Park VillageAs noted in the previous post, this train trip had more than vacation and scenery in its agenda, we also had several northeaster states that we wanted to visit. To this point of my story, we got North Dakota and Montana covered. I had planned our first day in Montana to be a Glacier park experience, but since we had a rental car we decided to drive to Wyoming and get it knocked off the bucket The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-91813128676207364382018-07-25T17:58:00.001-04:002018-07-25T17:58:25.263-04:00Northwest Grand Adventure 2018 Hinton to The RockiesFabHub and I have been lucky to travel a lot of the world during our lives. Water was at 2.84 and the speed was about 484.
We prefer above 3 feet.
It doesn't seem like a lot, but those 3 or more inches make dealing with rocks easier.
Most of the rapids were not a problem. I was a lot stressed about rolling again, mostly because it seems like such a fail when that happens. The water was moving slow enough today that it wasn't going The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-88980100096254495742018-06-13T18:33:00.000-04:002018-06-20T21:58:03.146-04:00High water on the Greenbrier
We kayaked Talcott to Willowwood on June 13, 2018. Water was 3 feet last night and 765 cfs. It jumped to over 4.5 feet today and 3200 cfs. We did not check that before heading out. It turns out there was a lot of rain upstream overnight. If we had known we would have done something different.
Four feet is too high to hit the first rapids. We did not think it through. Here it is! I know I have promised to share it for a while now, but we have been busy this summer!
Now that things have slowed down a bit I have a minute to put this blog together.
This is our favorite pizza crust. Not just because the others use processed flours as a crust, this crust is really very good. Being low carb and healthier is just a nice benefit and you can pick up slices!

Continuing the Summer of Painting Project
As shown in the last posting, I had an audience when I was painting the goat hay barn.
The next project was the goat house in this picture.
I tried to do something odd with this project and I pretty much succeeded.
I wanted to make the building three-tones of pink.
I did, sort of, but I won't try that again.
Even more odd, IThe Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-61768949957779765642017-07-26T20:07:00.001-04:002017-07-26T20:42:29.252-04:00Summer Project 2017 part 1 The Goat Hay Barn
The summer of 2017 is turning out to be pretty productive around the farm.
Since we are both home everyday now until school starts again we decided to get some painting done on all of these farm buildings that FabHub has built over the years.
FabHub and his brother decided to paint the big barns and I chose to paint our little ones.
I have collected colorful mistinted paint for years The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-4758230339363025672017-07-02T20:27:00.001-04:002017-07-02T20:30:01.526-04:00New River Pembroke to Bluff City 2 July 2017
We went out on the New River today.
Water was 3.69 at Glen Lynn.
Flow was 3010 cfm.
Lots of class I and II rolling rapids and a few slow spots.
Below is what happened after one of the really good class II runs.
Everybody had to dump the river out of their rides.
Just three of us today. There was a note on a kayaking site about not parking down by the water at Bluff City. The water was deep in some places and shallow, but floatable in others.
There were almost no rapids, just ripples.
We did hit some rocks and had to watch for them or get turned sideways.
FabHub got turned by a rock in one drop off and got pretty well swamped.
That was the only time we had to use the sponges.
For the record and because I am thinking about it:

Talcott to Willow Wood 29 June 2017Today, (29 June, 2017) FabHub and friends went kayaking without me. I stayed home and cooked, shopped with Mom, mowed the lawn, and then cooked some more. Just saying.
They did the next section of the Greenbrier running from Talcott to Willow Wood.
The water at Alderson was 2.85 this morning and 2.81 this evening.
The water at Hilldale was 1.50 this evening.

One of the places we take the kayaks is Sherwood Lake in Greenbrier county, WV.
We spend a week up there in July, which gives us plenty of chances to get out on the water. The lake is a short walk through the woods from where we are camped. I don't like the idea of loading up the kayaks, driving over there, unloading....
sounded like an opportunity to DIY a kayak cart!
I built these The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-34661414876780686172017-06-26T15:45:00.000-04:002017-06-29T20:19:33.239-04:00Making Kayak Sponges
Our first trip on a river with actual splashing water and
a kayak with a larger seat opening proved one thing to us.
We need to be able to bail water out of there!
I looked online and found bilge pumps, but that seemed too simple.
I looked some more and found Kayak Bilge Sponges.
And most importantly, a DIY for how to make them myself.
I have grommets, a sewing machine, and somethingThe Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-55903378111481473562014-08-26T12:19:00.002-04:002014-08-26T12:20:34.429-04:00New Birds on the Farm
A few weeks ago I thought my original flock of chickens was down to two.
Mavis and Louise.
Mable was the most recent to have disappeared.
On the other side of the yard we also had Peepers the lone Guinea that FabHub managed to hatch in an incubator and his little Cochin friend Buddy that we got at the flea market.
Peepers was so small and alone that we looked for another small bird to The Curryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08578679277864538013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16965202.post-41257963906320074442014-07-22T20:33:00.001-04:002014-07-22T20:33:30.880-04:00Camping with Friends
Our summer vacation this year was spent at Lake Sherwood right here in West Virginia.
We were invited to spend the week with some friends who have an annual family reunion camping event at the lake. We had visited on single day trips during the last couple of years, but this sounded like an adventure so we decided to go crazy and jump right in to camping.

I have seen the basics of these puffs listed on lots of web sites, Pillsbury and Kraft included, they both called them Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs. One highlighted their brand product the other highlighted their brand product. Plenty of other places also listed these same ingredients and instructions - but nothing exactly like I made. Several years ago I decided to make teepee tents for the grand-niece and nephew. I got the fabric and cut everything out, but talked Mom into doing the sewing since I didn't have a machine. I thought (out loud it seems) about making some more at the time, so guess what Mom got me for Christmas that year? Yes, a sewing machine.
